Leave a border of floor
Keep roughly 30–60 cm (1–2 ft) of bare floor between the rug and the walls, so the rug frames the room instead of filling it.
Size Guide
A rug that is too small makes a room feel unsettled. Here is how to choose one that fits, in feet or centimetres, room by room.
Find my sizeThree Rules
Most disappointments come from a rug that is a size too small. These three habits get you most of the way, whatever the room.
01
Keep roughly 30–60 cm (1–2 ft) of bare floor between the rug and the walls, so the rug frames the room instead of filling it.
02
At least the front legs of sofas and chairs should rest on the rug. It ties the group together, and stops the rug looking like a doormat.
03
Mark the rug's outline on the floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day. It is the quickest way to feel a size before you buy.
Standard Sizes
Each shape is drawn to scale against its neighbours.
Feet are converted at 1 ft = 30.48 cm and rounded to the nearest centimetre. 8 × 10 ft (244 × 305 cm) is held in stock and ready to ship. All other sizes are made to order and take up to 90 days.
Room By Room
The rug should be large enough that every seat in the group has at least its front legs on it. In most living rooms that means 8 × 10 ft; for a smaller seating group, 6 × 9 ft; for an open-plan room, 9 × 12 ft or larger.
Measure the table, then add about 60 cm (2 ft) on every side. That keeps all four chair legs on the rug even when chairs are pulled out, which stops them catching on the edge.
Place the rug so that at least the lower two-thirds of the bed sits on it, with about 60 cm (2 ft) showing on each side and at the foot. For a queen bed, 8 × 10 ft; for a king, 9 × 12 ft. A pair of runners at the sides is a good alternative.
A runner should leave about 10–15 cm of floor on each side, and a hand's width or more at each end. Measure the clear width between skirting boards, and the length between doors. Check that doors can swing open over the pile.

How To Measure
Measure the room or the furniture group you are placing the rug under: width, then length, in a straight line.
Stick painter's tape on the floor at the rug's size. Walk around it, sit where you sit, and look at it from the doorway.
Check doors can open over the pile, that the edge does not meet a radiator or vent, and that stair or threshold edges are clear.
